Wall Drug is essentially a shopping mall with all the shops operated by the ownership, a roadside attraction/tourist trap that brings in millions of visitors each year to a town that has less than a thousand residents. In a kitschy way, it's actually kind of fun.
There are three colorful characters represented on the pole, which is made of wood, standing about twelve feet high. The top and bottom characters are easily birds, with the top one's wings extended. The center character might be a beaver, with big teeth and a broad tail. Unfortunately, there's no suggestion as to any back story. The totem pole may be here just to look good and add character to the Old West theme of Wall Drug, or there might be a big in-joke lurking in there somewhere.
