At ten past five in the afternoon on September 8, 1958, the train that would inaugurate the railway line between Ourense and Santiago left the Ourense station. It was Monday and yet in Ouense the day looked as if it were a summer Sunday. It was not be for lowerly. With this inauguration, the longest claim to the Galician railway was put to an end, of a route that had been completed no less than 75 years late: the direct railway to Madrid.
The inaugural train consisted of one of the electric diesel locomotives that were bought thanks to American aid after the agreement between Franco and Eisenhower, the 1801, the first of its series, a van, four passenger cars, a dining car and a saloon car . The saloon car would carry Franco and Cardinal Quiroga Palacios as passengers. Franco had arrived in Ourense from Lugo, shortly after lunchtime. They saw him pass by Gustei and Cudeiro, after four thirty in the afternoon, in a procession of cars in which several ministers were also going.
