The church was originally built in 1719, in a more modest way. The temple was then renovated by the queen Dona Mariana Vitória de Bourbon, wife of the kink Dom José I. This took place between 1743 and 1765.

There two bell towers and inside some works by Vieira Lusitano. The ceiling is beautifully covered with paints

The tomb of the queen, created by the famous artist Machado de Castro, is located inside the church.

This church is classified as National Monument.
