This wooden font cover sits on a 15th century font in the south wast corner of the church. The cover dates from 1957. Around the base are carved cherubs faces and grapes, which is all set on eight spheres.
The 15th century font has traceried panels with an inscription of Greek letters forming a palindrome which reads: NIΨONANOMHM MHMONANOΨIN
This may be translated as: ‘Wash away thy sin, wash not thy face only’ and is said to have been composed by the Greek Emperor Leo in the ninth century.
