Fort in the Botshol
The Fort in the Botshol is a fort of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. The fort is located in the Noorderpolder of Waver-Botshol, south of the Waver.

Particularities
This fort is the only fort of the Defense Line, of which the defensible earthwork from 1895 has been preserved. The weak peat soil made it necessary to reinforce the soil with large amounts of sand. The sand body was transformed into defensible earthenware with gun emplacements. The wide flooding allowed a good defense here, so that the construction of concrete buildings was postponed and ultimately omitted. Also unique was the bridge, the middle of which could be removed in times of danger. In the 1980s it was replaced by a simple wooden bridge due to its poor condition.

The plans for the fort were fixed. It had to guard the accesses formed by the dike along the Wavre and the dry land in the present polder. The fort is located about 3 km as the crow flies, between Fort Waver-Amstel and Fort aan de Winkel.

The fort is currently owned by the biggest Dutch nature preservation company called: Natuurmonumenten. Due to the sandy soil, the flora deviates strongly from the nearby area, including Blue bedstraw and Little thyme.

About Defence Line of Amsterdam:
The UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Defence Line of Amsterdam (in Dutch named Stelling van Amsterdam), is a 135 km ring of fortifications around Amsterdam. It has of 42 forts that are 10–15 km from the centre and lowlands, which can easily be flooded in time of war. The flooding was designed to give a depth of about 30 cm, too little for boats to cross. Any buildings within 1 km of the line had to be made of wood so that they could be burnt and the obstruction removed.

The Stelling van Amsterdam was constructed between 1880 and 1920. The invention of the aeroplane and tank made the forts obsolete almost as soon as they were finished. Many of the forts now are under the control of both the town councils and the nature department. They may be visited by the public, and admission is free on Monuments Day, the second Saturday in September.
