Lake Newport is Reston's youngest lake, but has the longest dam, extending about 800 feet. Lake Newport has the smallest watershed (the land mass that drains into the lake) at 132 acres and is part of the larger Lake Anne Watershed. Newport's output is channeled by pipe under Baron Cameron Avenue into Lake Anne.

The lake belongs to the Reston community and is managed by the Reston Association. The association's active maintenance, water quality monitoring, fisheries stocking, wildlife habitat improvement, water safety education, and dredging to remove sediment.

Problems faced by Reston's lakes are storm water runoff, sediment, excessive aquatic plant growth, and litter.
