The blue plaque is located on the WH Smith building on Princess Street in Knutsford town centre. Miss Matty’s Tea Shop (WH Smith, Princess Street) The blue plaque is inscribed as follows; “This property built in the reign of George I is reputed to have been the fictional home of Miss Matty the principal character in Mrs. Gaskell’s ‘Cranford’ and was also the home of Miss Elizabeth Harker upon whom Mrs Gaskell based her ‘Cranford’ character Betty Barker” ( visit link) 'Cranford' is a novel written by the 19th-century English writer Elizabeth Gaskell. It was first published, irregularly, in eight instalments, between December 1851 and May 1853, in the magazine Household Words, which was edited by Charles Dickens. It was then published, with minor revision, in book form in 1853.
