NL: Welkomstbord van de stad Borgloon. Het bord staat aan de grens met Guigoven (Kortessem).
Loon is afgeleid van het Germaanse Lauhun dat beboste heuvel betekent. Mogelijk werd het reeds in 938 voor het eerst vermeld als Lone. Het verschijnt voor het eerst in 1078 in teksten als Lon. Vanaf de 12e eeuw is ook de Romaanse vorm Looz bekend. Borgloon betekent dus burcht op een beboste heuvel en de plaats lag binnen het gebied van de Eburonen.

Loon is derived from the Germanic Lauhun which means wooded hill. It may have been first mentioned as Lone in 938. It first appeared in 1078 in texts as Lon. The Romanesque form Looz is also known from the 12th century. Borgloon thus means castle on a wooded hill and the place was within the area of the Eburones.
