The church was organized in 1769 by Rev. Samuel Hopkins of Great Barrington. The Congregational Church and Society consisted of nine male members. Land for the meeting house and nearby burying ground was donated by the heirs of Rev. Reynolds. The original meeting house was built just to the southwest of the present church in 1770. In 1805 the current church was erected in the Federal style by architect and builder Benjamin D. Goodrich. The steeple above the clock was designed by Asher Benjamin and the lower tower by Charles Bulfinch. In 1961, the congregation voted to join the United Church of Christ.
The two story church has as symmetrical plan. A central entrance project out from the middle of the front. Recessed on each side are a pair of shuttered windows. The second floor contains a triple window above the entrance with a lunette above the central window. The recesses contain windows hat match the lower floor.
A clock tower rises above the gabled roof is a clock tower with a three sided clock. Above is an open octagonal belfry then a cupola, with a finial and weather vane. The sides are six bays wide with windows on both levels of each bay that match the windows on the front of the church.
The Church on the Hill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 30, 1982.
