Bennett had been a slave of the Murrels in Clover Bottoms of Horse Creek. He took up the ways of white men after the [Civil] War and became rich. He remained a bachelor. He owned much land and had the finest of everything. He bred horses and sold horses and made much money. It is said the state got all of his money after he died.
