He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Section 3, Site 1862.

Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego was named in his honor as well as Rosecrans Avenue in Los Angeles CA.
Description:
From Find A Grave: Civil War Union Army Major General, US Congressman, Inventor. His innovations were odorless oil, a round lamp wick, a short practical lamp chimney, and a new economical method of manufacturing soap. Rosecrans was a graduate of the Class of 1842 at West Point. During the Civil War he rose to the rank of major general due to his astute judgment and strategic planning of military actions. He could have been president. He was offered the position of running with Abraham Lincoln as Vice President. He hesitated and when finally deciding to accept, it was too late as Andrew Johnson had already been named. Had Rosecrans answered immediately, he would have been president after Lincoln's assassination in 1865. He resigned from the Army in 1867 to resume his career in business and moved to Los Angeles. He was elected as a Congressman and represented the state of California from 1881 to 1885. "Old Rosy" was named Ambassador to Mexico and finally appointed Register of the Treasury from 1885 to 1893. He retired to his ranch at Redondo, California. (now Redondo Beach) He died here and after a Catholic Mass at St. Vibiana Cathedral in downtown Los Angeles, his body was transported to Arlington National Cemetery for burial. His brother was the first Catholic Bishop of Columbus, Ohio.
