Basilique Notre-Dame de Bon-Secours

La basilique Notre-Dame de Bon-Secours, (autrefois dite Notre-Dame-du-chêne-entre-deux-bois) est située au centre même de Bon-Secours, un village à la frontière franco-belge qui fait aujourd'hui partie de Péruwelz, dans la province de Hainaut (Région wallonne de Belgique). Elle est le centre d'un pèlerinage marial qui débuta au Moyen Âge autour d'un vieux chêne dédié à Notre-Dame-du-chêne-entre-deux-bois).

La basilique actuelle, dédiée à la Vierge-Marie, fut construite de 1885 à 1892 en style néogothique.

Historique

Un chêne au sommet d’une butte sert au Moyen Âge de borne entre les territoires de Péruwelz, Blaton et Condé-sur-l'Escaut. Une statue s’y trouve accrochée. Elle est vénérée sous le vocable de Notre-Dame du chêne entre-deux-bois, surtout par les habitants de Peruwelz pour lesquels ces lieux étaient terrain commun, laissé à l’usage de tous pour le pâturage, la récolte de bois et autres produits de la forêt.

Au début du XVIIe siècle, le chêne est mourant, et l’image a disparu. Le bois de l’arbre abattu est utilisé pour faire une nouvelle statue de la Vierge Marie portant l’Enfant Jésus. Elle est placée dans un petit abri de pierre, à l’endroit même du chêne disparu. Le vénération reprend , sous le nom de Notre-Dame de Bon-Secours, d’autant plus que la peste ravageant la région épargne la ville de Péruwelz.

En 1637, les autorités de Péruwelz, reconnaissant de la protection mariale reçue, adoptent en quelque sorte la statue. Une chapelle est construite pour l’abriter. Tous les jours une messe y est célébrée. Les pèlerins commencent à affluer.

La chapelle étant devenue exiguë, elle est agrandie de 1643 à 1645, l’ancienne chapelle devenant le chœur de la nouvelle.

La pratique des pèlerinages continue même durant les guerres de Louis XIV, les temps troublés du XVIIIe siècle et la période révolutionnaire. La pratique des ex-votos se développe. Une prière est proposée aux pèlerins : « Dieu de miséricorde et de toutes consolations qui accordez à vos serviteurs le soulagement nécessaire contre les tribulations dont ils sont affligés accordez-nous par l’intercession de Notre-Dame de Bon-Secours, votre sainte et digne mère, les grâces nécessaires pour supporter avec résignation les maux spirituels et corporels qu’il vous plait nous envoyer, et daignez couronner nos souffrances par l’immortalité bienheureuse. Ainsi soit-il. »

The Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours church

The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Bon-Secours, (formerly known as Notre-Dame-du-chêne-entre-deux-bois) is located in the very centre of Bon-Secours, a village on the French-Belgian border that is now part of Péruwelz, in the province of Hainaut (Walloon Region of Belgium). It is the centre of a Marian pilgrimage that began in the Middle Ages around an old oak tree dedicated to Notre-Dame-du-chêne-entre-deux-bois).

The present basilica, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was built from 1885 to 1892 in neo-gothic style.

History

In the Middle Ages, an oak tree at the top of a hill was used as a boundary between the territories of Péruwelz, Blaton and Condé-sur-l'Escaut. A statue hangs there. It is venerated as Our Lady of the oak tree between the two woods, especially by the inhabitants of Peruwelz, for whom these places were common land, left to the use of all for grazing, wood harvesting and other forest products.

At the beginning of the 17th century, the oak was dying, and the image disappeared. The wood from the felled tree was used to make a new statue of the Virgin Mary carrying the Child Jesus. It is placed in a small stone shelter, in the same place of the vanished oak. The veneration resumed, under the name of Our Lady of Good Help, especially since the plague ravaging the region spared the town of Péruwelz. P> In 1637, the authorities of Péruwelz, recognizing the Marian protection received, adopted the statue. A chapel was built to house it. Every day a mass is celebrated there. Pilgrims begin to flock there.

The chapel having become cramped, it was enlarged from 1643 to 1645, the old chapel becoming the choir of the new one.

The practice of pilgrimages continued even during the wars of Louis XIV, the troubled times of the 18th century and the revolutionary period. The practice of ex-votos develops. A prayer is offered to the pilgrims: "God of mercy and of all consolations who grant to your servants the necessary relief from the tribulations they are afflicted with, grant us through the intercession of Our Lady of Good Help, your holy and worthy mother, the graces necessary to bear with resignation the spiritual and bodily ills that you please send us, and deign to crown our sufferings with blessed immortality.
