Wolf in Sheep's Clothing Poppyhead, National Cathedral - District of Columbia - Wooden Church Artefacts on Waymarking.com

This poppyhead can be found in the Great Choir of the National Cathedral. The Great Choir is the area right up by the High Altar and has long stalls (pews) for the Cathedral Choir. The stalls were carved from oak by Irving & Casson–A. H. Davenport Co. of Boston (1875-1974). These stalls are used by the choir on Sundays and by worshippers during the week.

Some of the dioceses of the Episcopal Church are represented in the needlework of the stall cushions. The stalls are decorated with carved poppyheads, such as this Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing.
“The hand-carved armrests feature unique carved images, including Noah’s Ark, Moses in the bulrushes, the Christmas angels and various Christian symbols. Carved during and after World War II, the armrests also feature contemporary elements, such as St. George’s lion (the symbol of Great Britain) devouring a snake whose face is a caricature of Adolf Hitler.”

There are seats reserved the U.S. House and U.S. Senate chaplains, one can be seen in the Waymark photo.
