The Mackay Cemetery was established in 1865 with the earliest burial being recorded in July 1866. The cemetery was divided into sections according to religious denomination and included an alien section. The cemetery contains South Sea Islander, Japanese, Javanese (Muslim) and Singhalese graves.
In the late 1990's the cemetery was closed to new burials and replaced by Walkerston and Mt Bassett cemetries
