Located in Manotick, a historic and picturesque village situated on the banks of the Rideau River, south of Ottawa, the Manotick Dam is one of 50 dams and weirs, 13 electronic monitoring stations and 24 lock stations on the Rideau Canal. The first dam in this location was built in 1858 as part of the restructuring of the water control system for the dam and weir near the Long Island locks. The dam raised a head of water and soon after, Moss Kent Dickinson applied for the water rights to this location, where he then completed construction of the Long Island Flouring Mill (now Watson's Mill). The dam has been rebuilt several times - in 1947-48 the present day concrete structure was built.
