Coat of arms of a William Anker in the east window of St Mary's church, Cropredy.

"This window was given to the Church by the Vicar and Church Wardens in 1877 The Artist was Mr Westlake and it depicts ‘What the eye hath not seen, neither hath it entered into the heart of man.’

The window has four lights and so no central figure was possible. The window is designed to show ‘The exaltation of Christ as the mystic Lamb of God.’ In the left hand corner at the base we see St John the aged apostle in a trance, with an angel calling his attention to the heavenly vision.

Twenty-four Elders in robes of white and gold kneel in a circle. The crowns on their heads and harps in their hands denote their royalty. In a row above them are martyrs, in red to symbolize their sufferings. They are carrying palms. At their head stands St Stephen, the Deacon.

Further in the distance is the ‘multitude’ dressed in blue and bearing white lilies. Then a row of Angels who are offering incense, a type of prayer, while in the centre the angel stands with his censer before the golden altar.

Above all ‘in the midst of the throne’ the lamb ‘as it had been slain’, his blood filling the chalice. A circle of seraphs appear below, and in two of the quatrefoils are the four Evangelists with their books of His earthly life.

This window is based on: Book of Revelation, Chapters 4-8

[A] plaque by the east window gives the names William Wood DD (who was vicar at the time) and George Walker and William Anker (who were presumably churchwardens and benefactors to the window as they belonged to prominent local families)."
