"The city takes its full extent in the middle of the XIVth century, at the time of the Hundred Years War, when we decide to reinforce the natural fortifications of the site by enclosures swarmed with towers and by an imposing keep directly dividing the castle and the town .
Rue Buffon, protecting the main gateway to Bourg Notre Dame, is the Barbacane. This front door, pierced with fire hydrants, built in the 15th century, has a certain aestheticism with its three rows of crows.
A little further on, we find ourselves on rue Buffon opposite Porte Sauvigny. Built around 1447, you can still see the grooves where the arms of the drawbridge were lodged which spanned a ditch.
The small town of Semur en Auxois is coiled in a loop of the Armançon, to cross it, it has during its long history endowed with several bridges, and its fortifications it has kept powerful towers.
There are then three fortified districts, that of the keep guarded by four round towers (the Margot towers, the Orle d'Or, the Gehenne and the Prison), the castle district to the west, and to the is the Notre-Dame district. "
