SHERIFF GEORGE
WASHINGTON GARRISON
SEPT. 20, 1857 - JUNE 5, 1908

Sheriff of Oklahoma County killed in the line of duty on June 5, 1908 in a wheat field on the Gilbert farm in Blaine County, Oklahoma during a desperate 45 minute gun battle with Alf Hunter (alias James Kingsbury). Hunter was wanted for the May 19 murder of Susie Pride in Oklahoma City. Hunter and the posse were shooting at one another from behind straw stacks as the lawmen heard the bullets "sing around our heads". The three man posse included - Deputies M. L. "Fate" Sanders, wounded during the battle, and Todd Warden, who later wrote of Garrison's "absolute fearlessness" during the battle. Shot in the neck, Sheriff Garrison was found "in a kneeling position with his head thrown forward on his rifle." His death was described as "almost instantaneous". Hunter fled the scene and was not arrested until Sept. 27, 1909 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He was found guilty of the murder of Sheriff Garrison on Oct. 6, 1909 and executed by hanging on Apr. 8, 1910 in Watonga, Oklahoma.
