Zoals gebruikelijk in vestingsteden werden ook in Brielle de wachtdiensten bij de verschillende poorten geregeld vanuit een centraal in de stad gelegen hoofdwachthuis. Dit stond van oudsher aan de oostzijde van de Markt, tegenover het stadhuis. De huidige Hoofdwacht werd daar in 1789 gebouwd ter vervanging van een ouder gebouw. De ontwerper was luitenant-ingenieur Johannes van Westenhout.
De Hoofdwacht fungeerde als centraal punt in de bewaking van de stad: Vanhier werden de wachten over de verschillende poorten geregeld. Militairen van het garnizoen dat in Brielle was gelegerd, verzamelden zich bij de Hoofdwacht om vandaar naar één van de stadspoorten te marcheren en na afloop van hun wacht weer terug te keren. De Hoofdwacht deed als zodanig dienst tot 1882, toen het Brielse garnizoen werd opgeheven en de poorten buiten gebruik werden gesteld. Daarna werd het gebouw de woning van de opzichter van 's Lands Fortificatiën en in 1965 kazerne voor de Koninklijke Marechaussee. Halverwege de jaren 90 kreeg het gebouw een horecabestemming.

As usual in fortified towns, the guard services at Brielle were also arranged at the various gates from a main guard house located centrally in the city. This used to be on the east side of the Markt, opposite the town hall. The current Hoofdwacht was built there in 1789 to replace an older building. The designer was lieutenant engineer Johannes van Westenhout.
The Hoofdwacht acted as a central point in the surveillance of the city: from here the guards were arranged over the various gates. Soldiers from the garrison stationed in Brielle gathered at the Main Guard to march from there to one of the city gates and return after their watch. The Hoofdwacht served as such until 1882, when the Brielle garrison was disbanded and the gates were decommissioned. After that, the building became the home of the superintendent of 's Lands Fortificatiën and in 1965 barracks for the Royal Netherlands Military Constabulary. In the mid-90s, the building became a catering destination.
