Historique

L'église de Sainte-Mère-Église est située à Sainte-Mère-Église dans le département français de la Manche. Elle date pour l'essentiel du XIVe siècle et fait l'objet d'un classement au titre des monuments historiques par la liste de 1840. Son clocher est connu pour être celui auquel s'est accroché le parachute de John Steele, lors de l'opération Albany au début de la bataille de Normandie. Son histoire devient très connue en 1962 grâce au film Le Jour le plus long si bien que les touristes de passage à Sainte-Mère-Église demandaient aux autochtones s'ils étaient bien sur la place de l'église du parachutiste. Le comité des fêtes de la commune décide alors d'accrocher au clocher un mannequin nommé « Big Jim » en souvenir de John Steele. Le parachute, l'uniforme et l'équipement du mannequin sont changés deux fois par an en raison du climat pluvieux du Cotentin. La commune a ouvert une ligne budgétaire pour le couvrir d'une peinture protectrice pour le changer moins souvent.

History

The church of Sainte-Mère-Église is located in Sainte-Mère-Église in the French department of Manche. It dates essentially from the 14th century and is the subject of a classification as historic monuments by the list of 1840. Its bell tower is known to be the one on which John Steele's parachute hung during Operation Albany at the start of the Battle of Normandy. Its history became very well known in 1962 thanks to the film The Longest Day, so much so that tourists passing through Sainte-Mère-Église asked the locals if they were in the parachutist church square. The town's festival committee then decided to hang a dummy named 'Big Jim' on the steeple in memory of John Steele. The parachute, uniform and equipment of the mannequin are changed twice a year due to the rainy climate of Cotentin. The municipality has opened a budget line to cover it with a protective paint to change it less often.
