The headstone reads:

S.J. Puffer

Killed by Explosion
of Hortons. Engine
July 18, 1897

Aged about 22 yrs.

The epitaph is well-faded, with parts of it illegible. It doesn't appear to shed any light on the accident, and the first line may begin "Death was the road", followed by "It was not his will but" and "God" ("his God?") in the last line. Unfortunately, a search of Mr. Puffer's name -- assuming his was a "mister" and not a "missus" or "miss" -- or "Hortons Engine" turns up no details. If there has been an agricultural or train accident in this area other than the train car derailment that happened in Argyle in 1985, recent history books are quiet about it.

Type of Death Listed: Accident
