In Bonn-Castell an der Römerstraße steht eine Rekonstruktion eines Römischen Schwerlastkrans. Er wurde 1989 von der Hürther Kranfirma Breuer gebaut und zur 2000-Jahr-Feier der Stadt Bonn geschenkt. Als Grundlage diente ein Grabrelief aus dem zweiten Jahrhundert, auf dem ein solcher Kran zu sehen war.

Bis 1997 stand der Kran im Stadtzentrum am Stadthaus, dann musste er aus Platzgründen in diese Grünanlage hier zwischen Römerstraße und Rhein verlegt werden. 2005 stürzte er zusammen und wurde aufwendig rekonstruiert und wiederaufgebaut.

Bei dem Kran handelt es sich um einen Bockkran oder Pentaspaston. Er ist aus Holz und Seilen konstruiert und hat eine Höhe von etwa 10 Metern. Wichtigstes Element ist das seitlich angebrachte Laufrad, in dem zwei Personen durch Laufbewegungen den Kran bewegen konnten. So konnten Lasten von bis zu sieben Tonnen angehoben und transportiert werden. Solche Kräne wurden zur Römerzeit hier in Bonn-Castell unter anderem dazu genutzt, die sieben Meter hohen Mauern des damaligen Legionslagers zu errichten.

A reconstruction of a Roman heavy-duty crane is in Bonn-Castell on Römerstrasse. It was built in 1989 by the Hürth crane company Breuer and donated to the city of Bonn on occasion of it's 2000th anniversary. A grave relief from the second century, on which such a crane was to be seen, served as the basis.

The crane stood in the city center at the Stadthaus until 1997, then it had to be moved to this green area between Römerstraße and River Rhine due to lack of space. In 2005 it collapsed and was extensively reconstructed and rebuilt.

The crane is a gantry crane or Pentaspaston. It is constructed from wood and ropes and has a height of around 10 meters. The most important element is the side-mounted running wheel, in which two people could move the crane by running. This enabled loads of up to seven tons to be lifted and transported. Such cranes were used here in Bonn-Castell in Roman times, among other things, to erect the seven-meter-high walls of the then legion camp.
