The Great Laxey Wheel was used to pump water out from the mine workings of The Great Laxey Mine until the mine closed in 1929.

The old family photograph shows my mother (on the right aged 5) with her sister when they were on holiday on the Island in 1936. To right of the picture is a sign which clearly shows the words "LAXEY GLEN GARDENS". The photography clearly shows part of the spokes of the wheel and part of the supporting structure.

Laxey Wheel is today a tourist attraction it was however built to pump water out of The Great Laxey Mine.

The giant Waterwheel the Lady Isabella also known as the Laxey wheel was completed in 1854 by John Casement, a native of Laxey and a brilliant engineer, the Laxey wheel is the largest metal waterwheel in the world according to Guinness World Record Limited.

The wheel has a diameter of 22m (72ft 2 in), and an axle weighing 10 tonnes (22,000lb).

The wheel was constructed to pump water out of the which produced Zinc and silver. Today the wheel is a tourist attraction.
