There is funeral draping -- note the tassles -- on the cap, which has an open book that could be a Bible or the Book of Life. The family name, "Raines", is on the plinth, with a cross pattern around the bottom of the headstone. Above the Woodmen of the World emblem is "He giveth his beloved sleep", and the inscription reads:

James C. Raines
Born Jan. 12, 1896
Died Oct. 16, 1918

He is not dead, but sleeping.
Was the inscription legible?: Yes
