This Malus Golden Hornet (Flowering Crab Apple Tree) can be found in the Quad outside the Mason Lounge in the Art Faculty building and the School of Mathematics (Watson Building).

The royal horticultural society describes the Golden Hornet as 'a small deciduous tree with a broad ovoid crown and white flowers followed by a profuse crop of bright, deep yellow fruits 2.5cm in length which persist well into winter.' (visit link)

The tree is identified by a staked rectangular dedication board in front of the tree which has the follow text:

"Malus Golden Hornet
planted in loving memory of
Jean Dowling 1941 - 1994"

Parts of the quad can be seen in the photographs of the Mason Lounge at this link:

and on this video:

The video was made in 1995 and depicts Mason Lounge very much as it was when I was an undergraduate in the late 1970's.
Location of the tree: The Edgbaston campus of Birmingham University

Type of tree: Malus Golden Hornet (Flowering Crab Apple Tree)
