The church was built in 1871 as a place of worship for the Congregational Union Church in Canada. The denomination was absorbed by the fledgling United Church of Canada in 1925.
The building has stood vacant for several years now, but has seen some basic maintenance over the years (window coverings, roof repair, whitewash, etc. In 1990 it received a Heritage Property designation from the Government of Ontario.
The Union Cemetery is located adjacent to the church.
Church and cemetery are located on Union Road about three miles northeast of the village of Lansdowne.
