Historie
Het Historisch Stadhuis is gebouwd in opdracht van Willem van Oranje, Baron van IJsselstein, die de bouw ook financieel mogelijk maakte. Samen met het ervoor gelegen plein De Plaats vormt het in Hollands-Maniëristische stijl gebouwde Historisch Stadhuis het centrum van middeleeuws IJsselstein.

Voor de financiering van het Historisch Stadhuis schonk Willem van Oranje destijds een bedrag van 1.300 gulden. In ruil daarvoor ontving hij tot zijn dood in 1584 jaarlijks een lijfrente.

Gebouwd rond 1560
Het monument is gebouwd rond 1560 en heeft - hoewel nooit door rampen geteisterd - wel de gevolgen van steeds wisselende architectonische opvattingen moeten doorstaan. Zo zijn in de loop van de eeuwen twee dakkapellen met trapgeveltjes verdwenen, evenals het oorspronkelijke bordes, dat net als de rest van de voorgevel was opgetrokken in baksteen met speklagen. Aan het eind van de 19e eeuw werd de voorgevel bovendien grijs gepleisterd.

Eind jaren 60 in de 20e eeuw voldeed het gebouw nauwelijks meer aan de eisen van de tijd. Het was sterk vervallen en te klein geworden voor het uitgedijde stadsbestuur en ambtenarenapparaat. Zij betrokken in 1974 een nieuw stadskantoor aan de Planetenbaan. In 2000 is een nieuw stadhuis, gecombineerd met het Fulcotheater, in gebruik genomen aan de Overtoom, hemelsbreed niet ver van het oorspronkelijke stadhuis.

Tussen 1974 en 1977 is het Historisch Stadhuis gerestaureerd, waarbij het deels in originele staat is teruggebracht. Het vervult nu vooral representatieve taken, zoals officiële ontvangsten en huwelijksvoltrekkingen. In de kelder van het stadhuis is een restaurant met de toepasselijke naam '1560' gevestigd.

History
The Historic City Hall was commissioned by William of Orange, Baron van IJsselstein, who also made construction financially possible. Together with the square De Plaats in front of it, the Historical Town Hall built in Dutch Mannerist style forms the center of medieval IJsselstein.

At the time, William of Orange donated an amount of 1,300 guilders to finance the Historic City Hall. In return, he received an annuity annually until his death in 1584.

Built around 1560
The monument was built around 1560 and - although never ravaged by disasters - did endure the consequences of ever-changing architectural views. In the course of the centuries, two dormer windows with stepped gables have disappeared, as has the original platform, which, like the rest of the facade, was built in brick with layers of bacon. At the end of the 19th century, the facade was also plastered gray.

In the late 1960s in the 20th century, the building hardly met the requirements of the time. It had become very dilapidated and too small for the expanded city government and civil service. In 1974 she moved to a new city office on the Planetenbaan. In 2000, a new city hall, combined with the Fulco Theater, was taken into use at the Overtoom, not far from the original city hall as the crow flies.

The Historic City Hall was restored between 1974 and 1977, partly returning to its original state. It now mainly performs representative functions, such as official receptions and wedding ceremonies. A restaurant with the appropriate name '1560' is located in the basement of the town hall.
