The asteroid discovered October 25, 198 by Zhuravleva, L. V. at Nauchnyj observatory (Russia) was named 4992 Kalman. .
Named in memory of the Hungarian composer Imre Kálmán (1882-1953). His life-sized monument is by Gabor Veres depicts Imre Kálmán sitting on a bench in a relaxed pose. Another face of the monument has a bronze laptop computer, listing a dozen of his most important works. The monument was unveiled on October 20, 2007 in front of the Imre Kalman Theater(a.k.a. Budapest Operetta Theater) to commemorate the 125th birthday of the composer. The monument is accessible at all times with no entry fee.
Emmerich Kálmán (1882 – 1953) was a Hungarian composer of operettas, who studied at the Budapest Academy of Music (with fellow students Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly). Th popularity of his cabaret songs encouraged him to compose operettas. His first was Tatarjaras (English: The Gay Hussars), first staged in Budapest in 1908. He relocated to Vienna where he composed the operettas Der Zigeunerprimas, Die Csardasfurstin, Grafin Mariza, and Die Zirkusprinzessin. In 1942, Kálmán left Europe to escape Nazi persecution, relocating to California and becoming a naturalized citizen of the United States. He returned to Paris in 1949 after the war.
