The Green Heart is at the centre of the Edgbaston campus of the University of Birmingham has been designed to provide easy wheelchair access from the university’s North Gate on Pritchatts Road.

The area is intended for everyone not just the staff and students of the university but also the local community.

This space was opened up by the demolition of the university's former main library and runs between the North Gate on Pritchatts Road and the University Square which has also be integral part of the scheme.

In its initial conception the university had a ‘formal avenue on the axis of Chancellor’s Court to the former main entrance in Pritchatts Road.’ This avenue was blocked until 2018 by the Main Library which was built on the north side of the University Square, ‘the centrepiece created by Casson & Candor that gave a grassy heart to the Campus.’ Following the demolition of the former Main Library the original design has been restored with the ‘Green Heart’ extending up to the North Gate.

The North Gate was the former main entrance to the university which features ‘Buckland & Haywood’s subtly curved lodges and enclosing wall of 1930, and gates by the Birmingham Guild.’

The Birmingham Guild Ltd. were architectural and decorative metalworkers be base on Grosvenor Road West and Sherbourne Street in the city. The Company grew out of the arts and crafts movement and was originally known as Birmingham Guild of Handicrafts. (visit link)

The Edgbaston campus site rises quite markedly from Bourne Brooke and the South Gate on Bristol Road most of the Green Heart is reasonably flat and has been designed to provide for disabled access from the North Gate to the Aston Webb building and the crescent of the original campus buildings including the Great Hall. The grass amphitheatre in the Green Heart uses this naturally rising ground in a series of wide grass step up to the level of the North Gate.
