FR La Chapelle des Pénitents gris est une chapelle située à Aubagne, dans le département des Bouches-du-Rhône, en France. Elle fait l’objet d’une inscription au titre des monuments historiques depuis le 29 juin 1927

Les Pénitents gris furent fondés sur l'initiative de soixante douze frères, le 4 juillet 1672, sous le titre de Notre-Dame de la Miséricorde et de Saint-Joseph. Ils sont souvent appelés les Bourras, du nom provençal de la toile grossière dont leur vêtement était constitué. Ils édifièrent leur chapelle sur un terrain acheté en bordure des remparts, situé au sommet du boulevard Georges Clémenceau. Cette chapelle présente une architecture très sobre, seule la vue d'un clocher-mur et de quelques baies en arc plein cintre indique à l'extérieur sa présence.

La Révolution française faillit être fatale aux confréries de Pénitents qui se virent confisquer tous leurs biens et interdire toute activité pendant quelques années. A partir du milieu du XIXe siècle, les confréries entrent dans une longue période d'agonie.

Si la confrérie des Pénitents gris connut un sort funeste, la chapelle est néanmoins restée consacrée au culte et à l'enseignement du catéchisme aux petites filles. Elle est aujourd'hui occupée par l'association Lei Dansaïre de Garlaban pour ses répétitions et ateliers.
EN The Chapel of the Gray Penitents is a chapel located in Aubagne, in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône, in France. It has been listed as a historic monument since June 29, 1927

The Gray Penitents were founded on the initiative of seventy-two brothers on July 4, 1672, under the title of Our Lady of Mercy and Saint Joseph. They are often called the Bourras, from the Provençal name of the coarse canvas of which their clothing was made. They built their chapel on land bought along the ramparts, located at the top of boulevard Georges Clémenceau. This chapel has a very sober architecture, only the view of a bell tower and some bays in a semicircular arch indicates its presence outside.

The French Revolution was nearly fatal to the brotherhoods of Penitents who were confiscated all their goods and prohibited any activity for a few years. From the middle of the 19th century, the brotherhoods entered a long period of agony.

If the brotherhood of the Gray Penitents suffered a disastrous fate, the chapel nevertheless remained dedicated to the worship and teaching of catechism to little girls. It is now occupied by the Lei Dansaïre association of Garlaban for its rehearsals and workshops.
