The British Virgin Islands Red Cross is one of nine overseas branches of the British Red Cross in the world. Other branches in overseas territories in the Caribbean-North Atlantic region are located Anguilla, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Montserrat and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The branch in the British Virgin Islands was started on Tortola Island in 1956. Then activities included first aid training and helping needy persons in the community. The branch expanded their mission over the years and now provide a range of programs, including disaster preparedness and management, risk reduction, community health support, first aid at events, medical equipment rental, home care and a youth programs. As in all Red Cross branches, they rely on volunteers for most of their work.
In 2017, when two Category 5 hurricanes devastated the Caribbean, the Red Cross gave cash grants to people who had lost their homes and livelihoods to help them rebuild after the disasters. This was supported by the UK government’s Department for International Development
