Congleton is a town and civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East and the county of Cheshire. It lies on the banks of the River Dane, 21 miles (34 km) south of Manchester and to the west of the Macclesfield Canal.
Congleton is known locally as 'Beartown'
In the 1620s Congleton became notorious when bear-baiting and cockfighting were popular sports. When the old bear became ill and died just before the Wakes the town lacked the money to pay for a new, more aggressive bear. Legend has it that Congleton used the money it had saved to buy a new Bible to pay for a new bear instead.
This earned Congleton the nickname 'Beartown'.

The folk song "Congleton Bear" was written by Derbyshire folk artist John Tams in the early 1970s. The chorus has the following words;
'Congleton Bear, Congleton Bear
They sold the Church Bible to buy a new bear.'

We tried him with potion, with brandy and pill
He died in his sleep at the eve of the wakes
The cause, it was said, was strong ale and sweet cakes:

And refreshed by the music he began for to dance
He danced down the road causing many a gaze
Word quickly spread that the old bear was raised:
He rolled his dark eye as he spied the she-bear
And with an embrace they danced jigs pair-and-pair
