School next to 5G Cell Tower raises concerns - Edmond, OK - News Article Locations on Waymarking.com

Some concern has been expressed regarding a new cell phone tower next to Russell Dougherty Elementary School.

Lindsay Amilian said she's been concerned with 5G cell phone towers in Edmond since seeing one go up across the street from Russell Doughtery Elementary School. She said enough isn't known yet about the towers.

"Can we maybe create some ordinances to push back these towers from schools and homes," Amilian said. "That's our biggest concern is this is actually more of a health concern to babies, children, pregnant women and the elderly."

Amilian said there is a concern the radiation from the towers could cause health problems, including cancer.

The American Cancer Society said older towers have not been shown to have these effects.

"Very few studies have been done about those causing cancer but what we have found that there really is no direct correlation between those towers and cancer," communications director Mark Beutler said.

Amilian said it isn't known what effect the new towers could have.

"While I understand people think this might be a great thing but what we're seeing is there is no safety testing," Amilian said. "Regardless of what a organization is saying, there has been no safety testing."

The city of Edmond said it can't deny the 5G towers from being built due to state and federal laws.

Resident Kelly Wood said she wants to see how the city can control it.

"It happened in all 50 states and I don't think there was much state control over the matter and I think the lack of education on the matter just made things worse," Wood said.

The group with concerns over the 5G towers plans to address the Edmond City Council at its meeting on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
