De Tuinen van Annevoie vinden hun oorsprong in de familiehistoriek van de Montpelliers die terug gaat tot het midden van de XVde eeuw. Het is Charles-Alexis de Montpellier die vanaf 1758, de tuinen zal inrichten. Alexis zich op zijn vele reizen door Europa. De tuinen werden dan ook ontworpen op basis van drie verschillende filosofieën:

De Franse stijl, waarbij de kunst de natuur corrigeert:
Een tuinarchitectuur die elke bocht of kronkel vermijdt om grootse, rechtlijnige perspectieven te ontwerpen. Een Franse tuin moet overschouwd kunnen worden als een schilderij. Voorbeelden: de Bloemenlaan, de Grote Laan, de Franse Waterval...(zie virtuele bezoek)

De Italiaanse stijl, waarbij de kunst aan de natuur zich aanpast:
Een tuinarchitectuur die variëteiten, contrasten en verrassingseffecten op de voorgrond plaatst. In tegenstelling tot de Franse stijl, worden bochten en niveauverschillen hier behouden en geïntegreerd in het landschap. Water is een belangrijk esthetisch gegeven in de Italiaanse tuinarchitectuur. Water wordt immers gezien als de ziel van de tuin. Voorbeelden zijn de haagbeuken, het artisjokbekken, de welving van het kasteel

De Engelse stijl, waarbij de kunst de natuur imiteert:
Een tuinarchitectuur die de natuurlijke effecten artificieel nabootst om terug te keren naar de natuur van Jean-Jacques Rousseau en de Engelse Romantiek. Voorbeelden: de Engelse Waterval en de Grot van Neptunus.

In de jaren 30 van de vorige eeuw gaan de tuinen eindelijk open voor het grote publiek. Als snel worden ze geklasseerd als Waals Erfgoed. Tien generaties van de familie Montpellier d’Annevoie hebben bijgedragen tot de inrichting en de verbetering van de Tuinen die in de lente van 2000 overgingen in de handen van Stéphan Jourdain en zijn familie.

Sedertdien werden de Tuinen vernieuwd met de aanleg van een vijver, een speeltuin, een frambozentuin, een rozengaard, een moestuin, een souvenirswinkel. En in de loop van de volgende jaren zullen er wellicht nog andere projecten te ontdekken zijn in dit domein waarvan de oppervlakte, sedert de overname in 2000, van 20 naar 50 ha werd uitgebreid.

The Gardens of Annevoie have their origins in the family history of the Montpelliers dating back to the mid-15th century. It is Charles-Alexis de Montpellier who will decorate the gardens from 1758. Alexis himself on his many travels through Europe. The gardens were therefore designed on the basis of three different philosophies:

The French style, where art corrects nature:
A garden architecture that avoids every bend or twist to design grand, linear perspectives. A French garden must be able to be viewed as a painting. Examples: the Bloemenlaan, the Grote Laan, the French Waterfall ... (see virtual visit)

The Italian style, where art adapts to nature:
A garden architecture that emphasizes varieties, contrasts and surprise effects. In contrast to the French style, curves and level differences are preserved here and integrated into the landscape. Water is an important aesthetic given in Italian garden architecture. After all, water is seen as the soul of the garden. Examples are the hornbeam trees, the artichoke basin, the curve of the castle.

The English style, where art imitates nature:
A garden architecture that artificially mimics the natural effects to return to the nature of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and English Romanticism. Examples: the English Waterfall and the Cave of Neptune.

The gardens finally opened to the general public in the 1930s. They are classified as Walloon Heritage as quickly. Ten generations of the Montpellier d’Annevoie family have contributed to the design and enhancement of the Gardens that passed into the hands of Stéphan Jourdain and his family in the spring of 2000.

Since then, the Gardens have been renewed with the construction of a pond, a playground, a raspberry garden, a rose grove, a vegetable garden, a souvenir shop. And in the course of the following years there may be other projects to be discovered in this domain whose surface area has been expanded from 20 to 50 ha since the acquisition in 2000.
