The Spirit of Progress is a bas relief sculpture in Holland, Michigan. It is on the former Montgomery Ward Building which is now The Outpost in downtown Holland.
A plaque outside the building references the sculpture, it states:
Outpost
25 East 8th Street
Built in 1930, this building was originally
the site of Montgomery Ward Company.
It also housed Vogelzang Hardware
from 1960 through 1982 until
the Outpost moved here in 1983.
The structure’s exterior architectural
detailing and terra-cotta facade
are typical of the Art Deco period.
Featured is the bas relief,
“The Spirit of Progress”, a symbol used
by the Montgomery Ward Company.
