The grinding wheel was mentioned as early as 1380 and was in regular operation until 1988. Today it is a museum, you can have your own knives or axes sharpened during a visit.
The grindstones are driven by a water wheel with a diameter of 6 meters. The water wheel, which was restored in 2015 for 25,000 euros, and the shovel supports are made of oak wood, the 36 shovels are made of larch wood.
It is a so-called "undershot water wheel", as they are used as standard on larger rivers with a low head. Undershot means that the blades are being blown and driven by the water below. The efficiency is 65 percent.
