Juste avant l‘entrée du couvent, sous le passage couvert, un triple portail en ogives donnait jadis accés à son église, dont la plus grande partie s'écroula vers 1800.

Le couvent, connu parles textes depuis 1253, Fut édifié sur un ancien terrain comtal. Au cours du XIIIe siècle, on construisit d'abord-l‘aile sud-est, puis l‘église qui lui est perpendiculaire. L'aile nord—est, avec le réfectoire, Fut bâtie au siècle suivant, et la partie du nord—ouest (qui regarde la ville) ensuite, en plusieurs étapes, mais ne finit de clôturer l'ensemble que vers 1900. Après d'abord trois siècles de prospérité, l'établissement connut bien des vicissitudes pendant les guerres de Religion, où il fut saccagé et devint, même un temps temple protestant... Au XVIIe siècle, son église était aussi le lieu de réunion de l‘Abbaye de la Jeunesse, puis des Pénitents Blancs. Mais à la Révolution, il n'y restait plus que trois religieux, et les bâtiments seront bientôt lotis et vendus comme biens nationaux. Restauré, au début des années 1960, par la propriétaire d'une grande partie des lieux (Paulette Constant), l'essentiel des bâtiments fut acquis et réaménagé par plusieurs municipalités successives, entre 1981 et 2009.

Les dernières réhabilitations ont concerné les jardins et le cloître, maintenant ouverts tous les jours librement au public. Ces lieux, empreints d’une grande sérénité, sont à la disposition des habitants comme des visiteurs. Ils sont le cadre (en particulier le cloître) de concerts d'une très haute qualité, d‘expositions, de représentations théâtrales et autres manifestations culturelles.

The last renovations concerned the gardens and the cloister, now open daily to the public. These places, imbued with great serenity, are available to locals and visitors alike. They are the setting (in particular the cloister) for very high quality concerts, exhibitions, theatrical performances and other cultural events.
