Lipan Point is located at the southeast portion of the Grand Canyon near the Desert View Watchtower. It is accessed via a short spur road off Desert View Dr (AZ route 64). The relatively high altitude of Lipan Point offers a panoramic view of the canyon including portions of the Colorado River as it flows south and then bends west through the main part of the gorge.

The stamp was part of a series of international-rate airmail stamps which the U.S. Postal Service called “Scenic American Landscapes.” Fitting the expanse of the Grand Canyon on something the size of a postage stamp is challenging in and of itself, but it certainly doesn’t help when you get it backwards: The image on this stamp is famously reversed. After the mistake was discovered, the USPS did not bother to correct it. However, they did fix it when this same design was used on a postal card issued about 10 years later.
