This statue stands in the Linh Ung Pagoda atop Monkey Mountain (more of a hill) on a peninsula ten or so kilometres north of the City of Da Nang. The statue is 67 meters tall and measures 17 meters in diameter. Inside the statue are 17 floors, each representing a different aspect of the Buddha, however, at the time of my visit (January 2020) the stairs were not open to the public. The marble statue of the 'Lady Buddha' dominates the landscape of Da Nang.
The usually used name of the statue is 'Lady Buddha', however, this is incorrect. The statue depicts Guanyin, the Buddhist Goddess/Boddhisatva of Mercy. Guanyin gazes protectively across the water towards the City of Da Nang. There is a belief that she brings calm to the sea. Many locals make their living from the sea.
Guanyin is revered in eastern Asia as a protective, kind and caring female figure, both by Buddhists, who perceive her to be an enlightened one—a bodhisattva, and by Hindus, who perceive her to be a Hindu deity. Generally she is recognised as the "Goddess of Mercy" to all.
