The crypt of Florentine goldsmith and sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti is shared with his father, also a goldsmith and sculptor, Vittorio di lorenzo Ghiberti. A marble marker on the floor of the Basilica of Santa Croce has the image of an eagle with spread wings surrounded by a wreath. The marker for Lorenzo Ghiberti makes note of his most famous accomplishment. It is inscribed:

Description:

Lorenzo Ghibertiwas born c. 1378 in Florence, Republic of Florence. He learned the art of being goldsmith and sculpture by apprenticing with his father Vittorio. Although he was commisioned to produce many sculptures by his patrons in Florence, one work stands out above the rest - the east doors to the Baptistery of St. John in Florence. This relief sculpture is so exquisite that Michelangelo called the doors the "Gates of Paradise". Today these doors are regarded as a major monument of the age of Renaissance humanism.

Ghiberti also produced bronze statues to St. John The Baptist and St. Matthew. They are both located in niches in Orsanmichele Church in Florence. In addition his Ghiberti's book Commentario is the earliest known surviving autobiography of an artist.
