This bronze plaque is fixed on the wall of Saint-Joseph des Prairies church, located on boulevard Gouin Est in the borough of Rivière-des-Prairies — Pointe-aux-Trembles in Montreal, Quebec.

The Saint-Joseph parish of Rivière-des-Prairies was founded in 1834 and the church was built in 1875.

The site of the region is of interest for its historical value. Indeed, from the beginnings of New France, the site was frequented by explorers and missionaries passing through. The name of the river would evoke the first European who would have sailed in its waters in 1610, the Sieur des Prairies, a navigator from Saint-Malo and companion of Samuel de Champlain.

The text on the plaque is written in French and English and reads as follows:

IN 1610, DES PRAIRIES, CHAMPLAIN'S
COMPANION, GAVE HIS NAME TO THE
RIVER FLOWING PAST THE ISLAND OF MONTREAL.
