Tilburg University station is a railway station in Tilburg about two kilometers west of Tilburg station and three kilometers east of Tilburg Reeshof station. The station is located on the Breda - Tilburg railway line, in the past the Bels Lijntje branched off at the current University station. The Het Zand district is to the north of the station, and the De Reit district to the south.

Southwest of the station you will find Tilburg University and recreation area De Oude Warande. To the south is the Professor de Moorplein shopping center. The Statenlaan and the Conservatoriumlaan come together under the station viaduct. At the end of 2012, a bicycle and walking tunnel (Postelse Hoefpad-Academiepad) was opened east of track 1, along which the university's sports center and sports fields, which are located southeast of this station, are accessible. From sports tracks 2/3 this sports complex is easier to walk through the other railway tunnel (Conservatoriumlaan).

The station was opened in 1969 under the name 'Tilburg West', with a station building of the Sextant type. Tilburg University station has three tracks: two through tracks where the Dordrecht-Breda – 's-Hertogenbosch sprinters stop, and a headline that is used for the sprinters to Eindhoven. The central platform is in some places no wider than 2 meters and in 2013 special narrow shelters were installed for this reason.

Station renewal

In the spring of 2013, ProRail installed new, partly covered bicycle clamps and lockers and widened the walking space towards the platforms. At the same time, the municipality of Tilburg paved the walking path along the tracks 2/3, towards the university grounds. And to partly replace the greenery alongside it with lower shrubs in connection with social safety. And rows of trees were planted along this path. And road signs to Tilburg University have been affixed by the Dutch Railways and the municipality. At the end of 2017, Perron 2/3 was widened to eight meters and doubled in length, giving waiting passengers more distance to passing Intercity trains and freight trains. And that year, this station was given access to public transport bicycles for rent, as at many Brabant train and bus stations.

NS Stations Retailbedrijf is testing a smaller version of the kiosk at a number of locations: a store concept of less than 10 square meters for train stations where around 3500 travelers visit every day. A pilot with this concept has been running on the platform along track 1 since mid-2013. The old counter building has been renovated for this.

Name change

The city council of Tilburg and the university have for years insisted on changing the old name Tilburg West to Tilburg University, but NS initially saw little in it. In January 2009 it was announced that the name would be changed in December 2009. The municipality had to make a financial contribution for this.

The name change was postponed for financial reasons. A name change at the end of 2009 meant that the existing centrally operated train indicators would have to be adjusted elsewhere. This would cost 300,000 euros. As these pointers will be replaced by electronic variants at the end of 2010, it has been decided to implement the name change at the start of the 2010-2011 academic year. The costs for this would be around 55,000 euros. The university and the municipality of Tilburg would each pay half. This date has not been reached. Ultimately, the name change was postponed until the start of the 2011 timetable.
