This is a copy of "The Spirit of the American Navy" sculpted by E. M. Viquesney as a companion piece to the more well known "Spirit of the American Doughboy." This sculpture was first dedicated on May 30, 1929 and placed at the Hobart end of Memorial Bridge over the North Fork of the Red River on Highway 9. The sculpture was removed from the bridge in 1969, and placed in storage. After restoration by James A. Pitt, the sculpture was rededicated on November 11, 1978 at its present location. This sculpture is one of only seven known to exist.

The bronze sculpture stands on a three foot high granite base, on which is engraved: "Dedicated to Veterans of All Wars". It depicts a World War I sailor in uniform, holding his pillbox hat high in the air in his right hand. The sculpture is listed in the Smithsonian Art Inventory.
