The battleship USS
Arizona, BB-39, was sunk on December 7, 1941 during the attack on Pearl Harbor when a bomb penetrated a powder magazine. The ship exploded and sank with the loss of 1177 crewmen. Too damaged to recover, the wreck remains at Pearl Harbor.
In 1962, a permanent memorial was constructed over the wreck. During the construction of that memorial several pieces of the ship were removed, stored, and eventually transported to memorials all over the country. The memorial here houses an 800-lb piece of the ship, including a portion of the deck, that was moved to the park in 2018.
