[EN] Fort de Fouras or Semaphore de Fouras is the medieval castle of Fouras, a small town located in Aunis in the department of Charente-Maritime.

It is also improperly referred to by the Fort Vauban tourist brochures, although most of its construction is well before the intervention of Vauban.

The embouchure of the Charente represents a strategic site and already the Romans have built a castrum.

The castellany of Fouras returns in the eleventh century to the family of Rochefort which gets right of high, medium and low justice, and to tax the boats on the Charente.

In 1305, Philip the Fair bought Fouras and attached it to the crown, and then conceded again this feud which changed several times from lord, until Jehan II de Brosse, lord of L'Aigle in 1449 (1454?), Who built the keep from 1480 to 1490. This is the end of the Hundred Years War.

During the wars of religion, the strategic position of Fouras earned him to escape the destruction ordered by Louis XIII for all the strongholds after the capture of La Rochelle. It makes it a royal fortress.

During the war of Holland (1672 to 1678) it protects the embouchure of the river and the work of fortifications will continue until 1693.

When the old fort of Rochefort-sur-Charente became the Royal Arsenal of the Navy of Rochefort, Fouras dungeon served to observe the movements of the ships and to send messages to the signal tower built near the house of the chief of Wing.

The fort and the citadel were classified as a historical monument on March 13, 1987.
