The Anglican Cathedral Church of St Peter Apostle and Martyr was built and opened for worship in 1875 on the site of a small timber church opened for worship by 1850. Built in the Gothic style the cathedral used expressed common brick rather than the more traditional stone material. The brick belltower was constructed in 1938 when the original 1872 timber belltower was demolished and the existing bell ('Maud') rehung in the new tower.
