Leah Marjorie Yeager McCandless was a long-time resident of Hobart. She was very active in local organizations and church related activities. She was born in Wichita, Kansas on June 17, 1900 and passed away on May 22, 1996 at the age of 95. In 1980, Governor George Nigh declared a Leah McCandless Day celebrating her 80th birthday.

The plaque dedicated to her rests beneath a flagpole in front of the original Carnegie Library building at 200 S. Main. The plaque reads:
