Die Plastik zeigt eine Mutter, die sich über ihr sich anklammerndes Kind beugt. Sie schützt es vor Bombensplittern, Hitze und Qualm. Ihre Augen und ihr Mund spiegeln Schrecken und Entsetzen. Die Füße stoßen sich wund an Steinbrocken, die kurz zuvor noch Mauern von Häusern waren.
Der zehnjährige Schüler Heinrich Apel sah von seinem Heimatdorf Schwaneberg am Abend des 16. Januar 1945, wie die Stadt Magdeburg brannte. Dieses Erlebnis verarbeitete er viele Jahre später. Die Plastik ist Teil des Ensembles "Zerstörung und Wiederaufbau der Stadt Magdeburg". Neben dieser Arbeit gehören auch die Türgestaltung mit dem Titel "Zerstörung Magdeburgs" sowie die Plastik "Trümmerfrau" zum dreiteiligen Ensemble an der Johanniskirche.
The plastic shows a mother bending over her child clinging to her. She protects it from bomb shrapnel, heat and smoke. Her eyes and mouth reflect terror and horror. Her feet sorely bump into boulders that had been walls of houses shortly before.
On the evening of 16 January 1945, the ten-year-old schoolboy Heinrich Apel saw from his home village of Schwaneberg the city of Magdeburg burning. Many years later he worked through this experience. The sculpture is part of the ensemble "Zerstörung und Wiederaufbau der Stadt Magdeburg" (Destruction and Reconstruction of the City of Magdeburg). In addition to this work, the door design entitled "Zerstörung Magdeburgs" (Destruction of Magdeburg) and the sculpture "Trümmerfrau" belong to the three-part ensemble at Johanniskirche.
