The neoclassical Royal Opera House was was designed by the English architect Edward Middleton Barry and erected in 1866. It was 206' by 112' with a seating capacity of 1,095 and room for 200 people standing. It was officially opened in on October 9, 1866.
On the evening of Tuesday, April 7, 1942 the building sustained a direct hit by German Luftwaffe bombers. Most of the structure was collapsed, however part of the Corinthian colonnade remained intact.
After the rubble was cleared the Government of Malta discussed many plans for the site. In 2013 a plan by the by the Italian architect Renzo Piano was accepted. The ruins were redesigned to become an outdoor performance venue called the called Pjazza Teatru Rjal (Royal Theatre Square) that was officially inaugurated on August 8, 2013.
