Leo Popper and his family spend moments of relaxation in the cottage of the ferryman Proška on the bank of the Berounka River. They learn to fish, watch a herd of germany and sometimes find out something important about life. After a hard start, Leo will become a successful seller of Elektrolux vacuum cleaners, and he can fulfill his dream and buy a pond full of carp. Although the ceremonial catch ends in a trap, because the pond is empty, Leo will not give up and start breeding his own carp. However, the moment of success and happiness unexpectedly interrupts the arrival of the Nazis. When it comes to announcing that Hugo and Jirka are to go to the transport, Leo decides to feed them properly to survive the hardships. At first he tries to catch the fish, but if he fails, he persuades Prosek in desperation to lend him a dog and he can hunt deer. There is a death penalty for poaching, but Leo is determined to do his best for the sons.

Leo Popper tráví s rodinou chvíle pohody v chalupe prevozníka Proška na brehu Berounky. Ucí se rybarit, pozorují stádo srn a obcas se dozvedí leccos duležitého o živote. Po krušných zacátcích se Leo stane úspešným prodejcem vysavacu Elektrolux a muže si tak splnit dávný sen a koupit rybník plný kapru. Prestože slavnostní výlov skoncí trapasem, protože rybník je prázdný, Leo se nevzdá a zahájí chov vlastních kapru. Chvíle úspechu a štestí však necekane prerve príchod nacistu. Když prijde oznámení, že Hugo a Jirka mají jít do transportu, rozhodne se je Leo porádne vykrmit, aby útrapy prežili. Nejprve se pokusí nachytat ryby, ale když neuspeje, premluví v zoufalství Proška, aby mu pujcil psa a on mohl ulovit srnce. Za pytláctví je sice trest smrti, ale Leo je odhodlán udelat pro syny, co jen bude možné.
